Reviewing a film made by a legendary director, particularly the one the entire industry looks up to, tends to become a balancing act. I moved to Bharathiraja’s Meendum Oru Mariyadhai, determined not to fall into the trap. A couple of minutes in, I realized all of my prep was for naught. The film’s flaws and amateur making proved so unmistakable that I ended up having a hearty laugh in my needless sincerity. Random screen freezes and visual inserts would be the last thing you would like to see in a veteran’s picture. Meendum Oru Mariyadhai is reduced into a media demonstration for the large part as a result of poor editing. I sincerely think very few would have to miss these blunders and search if the movie has anything to offer.
Even if we leave aside the technical jumble, the story and its characters feel very shallow. The decision to re-christen Old Man (OM) as Meendum Oru Mariyadhai (MOM) can be highly counterproductive as we end up drawing direct comparisons to his own classic Mudhal Mariyadhai. The 1985 Sivaji-starrer worked big time due to its cultural setting. Back then, it was radical to observe a middle-aged man to share a relationship with a young girl. The ambiguity of the lead pair’s relationship was quite intriguing. Here, however, the association is much less ambiguous. The age gap between the leads makes it evident their bond is that of a grandfather and granddaughter. Also, the movie is set in England, an environment that is much more welcoming to differences than rural India of their 80s.
She discovers her guardian angel in Palpandi (Bharathiraja), a septuagenarian on a mission to match his old home mate’s last wish. You’d preferably expect him to counsel her, and get her legal and medical assistance, and help her face her demons. Alas, Palpandi has other thoughts. He takes her to a trip throughout England, offering her endless discussions about life. After some point, Bharathiraja’s Palpandi feels like Samuthirakani’s soul trapped inside Major Sundarrajan’s entire body. In an instant, Tamil translation accompanies each ‘life advice’ in English. “Life is amazing, Vazhkai Miga azhaganadhu.”
